This summer, we welcomed Marcus Pankey, a rising sophomore at East Mecklenberg High School, to our marketing team for a weeklong internship. At the end of his week with us, Marcus wrote a blog post recapping his internship experience.
At the age of fifteen, I was presented with the opportunity to work as an intern for Walk West, a digital marketing agency in Raleigh, North Carolina. This was such an amazing experience, and I am extremely grateful and blessed that I completed the internship. Everyone that I met at Walk West was kind and willing to share their knowledge with me.
On the first day of my internship, I didn’t really know what to expect. I thought that I was going to be assigned to one person and assisting with one project. I also thought that I would be doing a lot of stereotypical internship tasks, such as making coffee and doing grunt work. However, I was very happy that the exact opposite happened. My schedule was packed with team meetings, working closely with Walk West employees, and working on their YouTube channel.
My favorite part of my internship experience was getting to talk to Walk West employees. On Monday, I had lunch with the marketing team, where I learned about the different roles and responsibilities of each member. It was such a cool experience to see how people from different backgrounds come together with ideas and produce a great end result. I also really enjoyed all of the job shadows that I took part in. Learning how Walk West team members chose marketing as their career and how they discovered their passions was very eye-opening to me.
At the end of my internship, I left Walk West with a new knowledge of digital marketing and the business world. Before my internship, I was strictly focused on a career in medicine, but after my internship, a business focused career is definitely something I would be willing to consider.
