Web Design

Guided by research and optimized through growth, a Walk West website is way more than a work of art.

All design starts with research into the company, the category, the brand, audience, competitors, buyer’s journey and more. Our Discovery phase produces a set of guidelines that informs the sitemap and wireframes, the canvas on which our talented designers create a visually stunning website that creative performs as good as it looks.

Growth-Driven Design

Sometimes a full-blown website is called for right out of the gates with every pixel perfect. Other times an MVP, or minimally viable product version of the website, will do for launch. If there’s an opportunity for scaled down site, we view that as an opportunity to test nearly every facet of the site post-launch. Yes, post launch.

The approach is dubbed Growth-Driven Design and it allows us to collectively make assumptions and deploy a site earlier in the process. Then spend the design and dev time saved on optimizing the site based on how customers end up using it. Like the Agile approach to website development, this has proven successful in the right situations.

Responsive Design

Responsive design is no longer a trend – it’s a necessity – with more than 1 out of every 2 Internet visits originating from a mobile device. That number is not only staggering, it’s a mandate to agencies like ours and to businesses like yours. Ignoring mobile audiences creates risks far greater than simple UI and UX. Responsive design is a technique that allows a website to be reformatted based on the size of a user’s viewport (or screen size). The technique allows web developers the ability to establish rules that format a website according to available space. You may be familiar with the “pinch-to-zoom” gesture which allows you to zoom in on a particular section of a website while being viewed on a mobile device. With responsive design, instead of pinching to zoom, the content and layout will format accordingly so that particular gesture isn’t needed.

Benefits of Responsive Design

There are two primary ways to establish mobile friendliness: separate mobile websites and a responsive website. Our mobile efforts are concentrated on the latter – and for good reason. With a responsive website, you’ll be making content changes through a single application as opposed to multiple platforms each serving one piece of the segmented audience. Simply login to the content management system and make the change and it will reflect across all platforms in real time. There’s additional hidden benefits in terms of maintenance of the website. Because a responsive site has a singular codebase and a singular database, your long term maintenance costs will inevitably be more cost effective than the alternative.

All of our responsive websites revolve around three primary breakpoints: desktop / laptop, tablet, and phone. Although these are the traditional breakpoints, we inevitably have minor breakpoints around each to ensure a smooth transition no matter which device is being used.

Google’s Mandate

Google says non-mobile friendly website will be penalized in the SERP (search engine results page). Since the algorithm change, all of our websites come fully responsive and content managed. We can help whether you’re starting with a blank slate or if you have a non-responsive website that needs responsive integration.
